Dr. Joel Heidelbaugh is a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine and Urology at the University of Michigan Medical School and a family physician with more than 27 years of academic teaching and clinical experience. His practice spans full-scope inpatient and outpatient medicine, excluding active obstetrics, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based, patient-centered care.
Dr. Heidelbaugh’s clinical and research expertise includes gastrointestinal disorders, men’s health, primary care urology, and medical education. He serves on American Gastroenterological Association guideline panels for irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and Lynch syndrome, helping shape national standards of care.
A recognized leader in gastrointestinal education, Dr. Heidelbaugh is the co-editor and co-author of ROME IV: Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders for Primary Care and Non-GI Clinicians and serves as the primary care lead for the ROME V Committee through the Rome Foundation. He is also the Consulting Editor of Primary Care: Clinics in Office Practice and an Associate Editor of Conn’s Current Therapy.
Dr. Heidelbaugh has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over a dozen textbooks and holds multiple editorial leadership roles, including membership on the American Board of Family Medicine National Journal Club and the American Academy of Family Physicians FP Essentials CME Monograph series. A past president of the American Society for Men’s Health, he also contributes to American Urological Association guideline panels for male sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer screening, continuing to advance education and clinical excellence in primary care medicine.
